In My Garden: Crazy Bunny Opuntia

The Crazy Bunny cactus is in the same genus as the well known Prickly Pear. This one is new to the container garden this spring but has clearly grown in the two months since it was planted.

Two months earlier.
Opuntia microdasys monstrose has wavy paddles, which is signified from the "monstrose" part of its name. Golden glochids, or tiny spines that easily detach, give the cactus a golden glow.
Crazy Bunny is native to Mexico. Other cactus in the planter include another Opuntia variety with no glochids or spines, a star cactus, Zanzibar Aloe, and a Mammillaria senilis globular cactus which has spines that hook at the end.
